Praying for our Communities

  • Bishop Berrington Sikazwe
Date preached August 13, 2023

Greetings, dear congregants,

Today, we gather to delve into the transformative power of prayer, specifically in the context of praying for our communities. Prayer is not merely a solitary act; it has the potential to bind us together and usher in change in the lives of believers and unbelievers alike. As we explore the profound impact of consistent prayer, let us embrace the call to uplift one another through intercession.

1 Samuel 12:23 (NIV) –As for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord by failing to pray for you. And I will teach you the way that is good and right.

Outlined below are three essential components of our spiritual journey:

1. Praise
2. Worship
3. Prayer (Today’s Focus)

Prayer stands as a dynamic interaction that deepens our relationship with our Father, Jehovah. Abstaining from prayer is tantamount to sinning, underlining its utmost importance in our lives.

Hebrews 4:16 (NIV) – “Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”

Through prayer, we grow stronger, nurturing our confidence as we engage with our Father. It is our direct line of communication with the Divine, a conversation that molds us and brings us closer to His heart. Let us cultivate a prayer habit—a consistent practice that becomes an integral part of our lives.

A habit is a tendency or something done regularly, hard to give up. We must continue good habits and discard bad ones. God honors consistent prayer at specific intervals.

Daniel 6:1- (NIV)“It pleased Darius to appoint 120 satraps to rule throughout the kingdom, with three administrators over them, one of whom was Daniel.”

Consider Daniel, a captive who emerged as unique in the eyes of the king. God’s strategies often begin in seemingly ordinary circumstances. Despite challenges, everything works together for good for those who love Him and follow His purpose. Amid awkward times, we press on, knowing that God’s divine plan is unfolding.

Acts 3:1 (NIV) – “One day Peter and John were going up to the temple at the time of prayer—at three in the afternoon.

Observing specific times for prayer is paramount. Just as Peter and John encountered a crippled man during their designated hour of prayer, we are encouraged to present our needs and challenges during these focused moments.

Praying for Transformation and Unity in Our Communities: A Call to Action

  1. Gathering Prayer Items: As an act of unity, venture into our communities, engaging both believers and unbelievers. Collect prayer items, symbols of shared concern and hope. These items will be submitted next Sunday as a testament to our shared commitment.
  2. Checking Up and Encouraging: It doesn’t end with collection. Reach out to those who contributed prayer items. Inquire about their lives and well-being, extending a hand of encouragement and genuine care.

In closing, let us be reminded of the power of a prayer habit. Just as Daniel’s unwavering commitment led him to reign in two kingdoms, our faithfulness to prayer can open doors unimaginable. Whether morning, noon, or night, let us avail ourselves to these moments of communion with God. Through this discipline, we are united as a community, bound by our shared faith and dedication.

May we be a people who pray continually and at the right time, believing that breakthroughs and transformation will manifest as we unite in prayer. Together, let us rise in faith and action, knowing that as we submit our petitions, we usher in God’s kingdom here on earth.

Amen. 🙏
